Mein Interesse für amerikanische Ortsnamen hat angefangen, soweit ich mich erinnere, mit einem Blogeintrag von Peter David. David, ein bekannter Comic-Autor, trug zumindest damals eine Fehde mit dem ähnlich bekannten John Byrne aus. Lange Geschichte, und vielleicht ist Fehde nicht mal das richtige Wort.
Jedenfalls machte man sich im Byrne-Forum über den den Namen eines Schauplatzes in einer Serie von Peter David lustig, eine Stadt namens Bete Noire. So heißt doch keine Stadt!
David kommentierte das in seinem Blog so:
Well, gee. I could have gone for something even more obvious, like Hell, but that’s a real city in Michigan. Or perhaps Panic or Fearnot, but those are both in Pennsylvania. Some believe that Bete Noire is where the dead reside, so I could have called it River Styx, but that’s in Ohio. Peculiar would’ve been good, but the folks in Peculiar, Missouri, might have objected. Out of the Darkness af Peter David er tredje bog i Legions of Fire trilogien, der foregår i universet omkring tv-serien Babylon 5. Det er ikke nogen hemmelighed, at jeg er mere end vild med Babylon 5. Universet er fantastisk opbygget og historier og karakterer holder hele vejen.
