The guys who brought us the Red One camera have made a major announcement, and while I am terribly late in reporting on it I figured I would make some mention about it anyway. The cameras are available for the high end with the new Red 5K Epic , and for entry level with the Red 3K Scarlet . After visiting HD For Indies I discovered that the Epic is expected to be priced around $40k while the Scarlet is expected to cost $3K. I’m assuming they are targetting the big hitters like Peter Jackson and company with the Epic, the Red One will be for the indies, and the Scarlet will be for students and hobbyists. Also announced was the Red Ray, which from my understanding is a player capable of playing back 4K footage from Red’s compact flash cards, but I am not exactly sure what this is all about to be honest.

The latest chapter in the Red One Scarlet saga has been announced. You may recall last September when CG reported that Red One head honcho Jim Jannard decided to scrap Red’s affordable 3K Scarlet video camera due to “changes in the state of the industry” and promised a new design which would have more the feel of a 2nd generation camera than a brand new, first generation design. This is after Red locked down the design of Scarlet and was on the verge of shipping it. They dumped Scarl... more
I stumbled across an interesting thing today, a kit you can buy which shows you how to make no budget films. Now I haven’t really looked into this all that much, but it looks a little bit like “From Reel to Deal” by Dov SS Simens. Maybe worth looking at. If anyone knows anything about it, or ends up buying it let me know what you think. The kit is called No Budget FilmMaking Ultra Pack (like the title of the post says above). I have no idea if it is any goo... more

I have to precede this review by saying up front that the topic of this film — the “business” of childbirth, the skyrocketing Cesarean section rates in the United States, and the impact of managed births and unnecessary childbirth interventions on mothers and babies — is a topic near and dear to my heart. When I heard a while back that Ricki Lake was involved in pro... more

Last January, Chen Shi-Zheng’s Dark Matter premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize. But that wasn’t enough to get it a sweet deal, or any normal deal for that matter. It took a year, but according to The Hollywood Reporter , the film finally has a North American distributor in First Independent Pictures. Now the award-winner will get an April release, which will be... more
