On Thursday April 24, 2008 the US Senate unanimously passed a bill that will protect workers against discrimination based on genetic information. The timing of the vote was especially appropriate, since today is National DNA Day . The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act or GINA has been sent to the US House of Representatives. Passage in the House is almost certain, because a similar bill passed by a large margin in 2007. The Senate bill technically known as HR 493 is, in fact, an amended version of the previously passed House bill. President Bush has indicated that he will sign the law if it passes both chambers of Congress. When the bill is signed into law, it will mean that employers cannot legally ask employees for genetic information. Making employment decisions based on genetic information will also be illegal.
