Private schools are requiring fewer “community service” hours , reports the New York Times. They’re hoping for more quality service.
Through the holidays and beyond, high school students will be working feverishly to serve the needy — packing food baskets, ladling meals at soup kitchens, collecting toys for children in hospitals — all in the name of amassing the community service credits they need for graduation.
Cynics call these programs a form of forced altruism. P... more
Columbia.com features an editorial which aims to "compliment" President Bush "for holding down the number of pardons and commutations issued during his presidency … so far." Why? The piece says pardons and commutations "most often undermine the judicial process and usually reek of nepotism, favoritism or cover-up." Likewise, the piece cautions the President "against issuing any preemptive pardons before he leaves office" because it would be "highly controversial and a perverse use of power." A... more
