Outreach magazine has asked me to write a piece about great small church outreach ideas. Outreach’s Jan/Feb issue premiered the section, “Small Church, Big Idea,” featuring small church outreach ideas that worked.
Here’s where you come in: I need your ideas and your church could be featured in an upcoming issue. Here’s what we’re looking for:
Great outreach ideas for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, graduation, summer vacation, church camp, or any other idea that worked during summer months.
Email me with an overview:Â What problem were you trying to solve, what steps did you take, what results did you have, and how would you improve the effort next time.
Send along the church name, contact info including phone and email, church size (remember:Â small church means attendance under 300), and location.
I wish I could give you a prize if your idea is chosen, but at the very least you get to share your idea...

I can see stuff you can’t. No, I don’t mean I can see stuff like Haley Joel Osment — “I see dead people.” As my three-year-old grandson said about stuff like that — “Too scawy.” He meant scary. You had to be there, I guess, but it was really cute. Anyway, although I can’t see who visits the blog, what I can see is stuff like:
how many page views we get
what links visitors came from
what links they clicked out on
what posts...

Rick Warren talks about preaching for “life change.” Others speak of “transformational” preaching. The goal of every preacher I know is to bring an effective message, engaging the worshippers and leading them to a new encounter with God. It’s the “how-to” part of preaching that is hard, however. But a book by Joel Green and Michael Pasquarello, both of Asbury Seminary, offer a helpful perspective. The title is Narrative Reading, Narrative Pr...

If you’re keeping up, you know that our church is celebrating its 150th anniversary — our sesquicentennial year. Try making that announcement on Sunday morning! Anyway, our committee is doing a wonderful job of inviting former pastors, musicians, and members, and gathering photos and other memorabilia for our 7-month long celebration. Among the artifacts, clippings, and records that we have found, several small ledger books stand out.Â

I was out-of-town for the weekend and attended an Episcopal church today. The church is much larger than mine, but had a similar gothic design so I felt at home in the sanctuary. I love the Episcopal liturgy, but was concerned I might not be familiar with what this church was going to do.  But, they had already anticipated people like me attending.Â
