I discovered six groups a few days before Going Solo Lausanne , when Stowe created a channel for the conference . I’m happy to announce that they are sponsoring Going Solo Leeds and helping us get set up with their service, as it was pretty quickly obvious they were a really useful service for an event like ours. If you already use Twitter (and you should!) you won’t have too much trouble understanding the utility of six groups. The Going Solo six groups livecommunity aggregates tweets from members of the community which are hashtagged #goingsolo. If you don’t have a Twitter account, you can of course participate directly on the six groups site. Six groups also provides code which allows us to display the latest message sent to the Going Solo Livestream, and gives easy access to the functionality: So, in practice? register for a six groups account (you may use OpenID ) join the Going Solo community edit yo...

Twitter , a microblogging tool, is perhaps my best tool for connecting to other educators around the world. I find several useful links daily with it. Plus, I’ve received help to questions I’ve posted (ie within five minutes someone I never interacted with, sent me a link to download blank geopolitical maps so I could help a grade 5 teacher). But, I didn’t always think highly of Twitter. Initially, I zeroed in on the fluff messages about ‘pouring some coffee’ and ... more
A Gold Rush For Twitter Squatters?

WebProNews - “The proposed rush to secure your or your brand’s Twitter ID to guard against Twitter-squatting might not mesh well to you, either.” I was told that someone was going to create a fake stevencohen account on Twitter, now that I deleted it.  That would be hilarious, but problematic for managing my online reputation (right Greg?) ... more

Social Media is witnessing explosive growth and a site, blog, product, business, etc.. popularity and authority is measured by the number of followers they have on these social sites. That’s not something you’ve heard for the first time right? Here is a twitter based service called Qwitter ( http://useqwitter.com ) which tracks your followers on Twitter and alerts you every time a follower quits following you. Not only that but it also show you the message ... more

So, What’s Going Solo About?

Here we go, with the promised post. I swear I’ve been wanting to write this “tomorrow” for a few weeks now, but something always gets in the way. It’s late and I have a mighty cold, but as I promised, here I am, typing away on my chubby MacBook rather late at night (my MacBook looks chubby now because the MacBook Air has just been announced… and it’d make any laptop look overweight). When I decided to set foot in the event business , I pretty s... more
The Going Solo Website Exists!

Here we are. I’ve finally imported the blog posts I initially wrote on CTTS into this blog and the Going Far one. It wasn’t too difficult to decide which post went where. I still need to clean up, add some static content, fool with the sidebar, polish the design once the logo arrives — but at least the site is there, with its own personal URL, and you can feel free to link to it. Actually, please link to it. Announce Going Solo on your blog. We’ll have badges you... more
About a Date

Oh. Sorry to disappoint you — not that kind of date. Yeah, just a calendar one. Before Christmas and end-of-year festivities interrupted my blogging about Going Solo , I wrote about the headache involved in picking a date for an event . Over the last few days quite a few people have been asking me if the date I announced (May 9th) was “final”. My answer was: as final as it gets at this stage. I met yesterday with my sales partner, and amongst other things, we d... more
Headache: Picking a Date for an Event

When you organise an event , not only do you need a location , you also need a date. You know, things happen at the intersection of time and space. A rough glance at the calendar made me choose early May, as it’s far away enough to give us time to put things together (some people have gasped at how short it was, but I’m sure we can pull it off), and it’s also kind of empty on the conference front. I’ve asked around and gone through upcoming, and that time o... more
