I finally managed to find a decent specimen of this coin at the right price. The reverse shows the column of Antoninus Pius, erected after his death in 161 AD. Only the base of this column survives today and is displayed at the Vatican. Its my favorite example of Roman art, displaying the height of classicism on one side (the shown in the picture), while the other shows the rise of plebeian styles.

But couldn’t they have thrown in a foot massage while they were lecturing me about it? I ask for so little.
Last time, I waxed poetic on the subject of cli... more
Yesterday, I began posting a list of questions a contest entrant might want to ask her/himself before sliding that entry into a Manila folder and running it to the post office. Actually, it’s a list that an entrant might want to (repeat verbiage from previous sentence) about a week before the deadline, rather than at the last minute, to allow time to make any necessary changes.
Besides, the last minute is for quadruple-checking that you have actually put the entry fee into the ... more
