The open source concept confounds a lot of people. When I explain the SugarCRM manufacturing model, I often hear non-tech types ask me questions like “So, wait, these guys just test your product and track bugs, for free?”
It is odd, I guess, when you think about it. But the nice people at Psychology Today were not happy to just say “hey some people like coding.” Instead, they are looking deeper into the psychology behind open source and open wiki contributors.
In a new article , they seem to give three main reasons for people submitting free code to projects:
First, there’s street cred: People want to garner approval from their peers and build their reputation. Second, there’s self-actualization: Working on these projects is enjoyable in and of itself, and it also provides the opportunities to practice your skills, collect feedback, and grow as a geek. Dave Rosenberg eluded to an interview in his blog yesterday that he conducted with Matt Asay and Daniel Lyons during this week’s episode of Open Season. I just wanted to weigh in for a second on Facebook, and its luring Sheryl Sandberg away from Google.
I think it’s a good idea. I have a lot of respect for what Zuckerberg has done so far. But Facebook is at a very critical point - and as a CRM analyst at heart, I think the consumer experience is borderline horrible.
Google made its fortunes, in an indirect way, by being so simple that anyone could use the search features. It is still true to its roots and every thing Google puts out...

I’ve been checking out Ostatic - it’s definitely in in infancy, but I think it has some potential.
While there are a lot of great views in the blogosphere around open source software, this blog is dedicated to actually making some of this software available at its site, and allowing visitors to comment and collaborate around these projects.
Sure, there is some idea sharing at SourceForge.org, and of course the commentary found surrounding some of the better OS bloggers like ...
