Social Justice and the Candidates’ Charitable Donations

By happenstance I ran across a blog post somewhere on Sen. Biden’s charitable contributions over the past ten years.  They are very low , averaging something like 0.2% of his income (which looks like it averaged $230,000 or so a year). Sen. Obama’s have been very low as well up until his star began to rise maybe 3 years ago and his income jumped from the $200,000’s to the millions. Sen. McCain has given substantially more, though the attack made from Democrats is that he has mostly given to his children’s schools and to his charitable foundation.  Gov. Palin has apparently not yet released her tax statements. Sen. Biden’s spokesperson said that he gives much more but that it is to the Church so it is not counted.  I’m not sure why that is since giving to the Church is a deductible charitable donation–my parish even sends me a handy letter every year telling me how much I gave and to which ministries that way I can know ...
