Autism is a real condition, and I’m certainly not questioning the fact that it exists and that it can be difficult for a person to live with, even debilitating.  That being said, I’m starting to wonder if maybe some are taking things a bit too far with their desperation for a “cure” for the condition.  For one thing, it seems like the current culture is to treat even mild cases as being tragic, insurmountable and disastrous.  I’ve seen several sites dedicated to a kid who has shown signs of an Autism Spectrum Disorder with titles like “Hope for Jimmy” or “Pray for Johnny’s Future” - as if these (often mild) cases are somehow equivalent to having an aggressively matastrosizing cancer of multiple organs.
More than this, lets not forget that this is a condition which is social in nature and is characterized by a child not being able to communicate well with others, having inappropriate emotions and difficulty...

This comes from our friend Phil Plait over at Bad Astronomy. The WAMP ( Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe ) was launched by NASA in 2001 in order to take the most precise measurements to date of the variations in the microwave radiation of the universe. T his omnipresent microwave energy is actually an expression of the energy from the big bang itself and has been resonating ever since the birth of the universe. Of course, this has lead to a lot of disagreement, because to the average citizen, solar energy is a technology “of the futur... more

I’m not a doctor a nurse or a nurse practitioner and my only medical certification is a CPR card which I’m almost certain has expired by now. That having been said, I’m still pretty confident that I can accurately answer the question “Is it a good idea to go sticking people with needles which have been used on other people?” The answer is obviously a big NO .
For this reason every cl... more
This isn’t really a science story directly, but it’s still worth mentioning. Apparently people in Brittan have been getting hurt on a fairly regular basis by walking while texting and running into things. The British government has decided to therefor pad the lamposts in certain areas where this has been a problem . What about the trash cans, utility poles, other people, cars, bike racks, signs, oncoming traffic? Perhaps they’ll pad that later.
Personally, I think... more
