Reader Brant asked us to respond to the No Campaign’s argument that Sound Transit has come up short on the promises made for Sound Move in 1996. To a large extent, it’s fair to chastize Sound Transit as an organization for the failures it has experienced over its lifetime.  Voters were promised one thing, and thanks to several years of epic mismanagement, they’re getting the completion of that package quite a bit later than originally planned. There are two basic points here, though: (1) those failures are not the whole picture ; and (2) they’re essentially irrelevant to our current situation. It’s telling that their litany of light rail shortcuts totally ignores the other giant operations that Sound Transit is involved in.  The agency has operated an extensive bus system and two commuter rail lines for years, in addition to a short light rail line in Tacoma.  They carry 61,000 passengers per day and free up scarce lo...

Shocked? What are you, having a whack-attack or something? Give them a little credit, dumdum. Sound Transit hadn't proved themselves when we voted on Sound Move, but that's only two years past their initial plan. California's HSR is giving themselves a three-year window to get just an initial segment done. I think they can get at least something up by then. At the very least, we can agree that this truly isn't glacial pace, because even the fastest glaciers move less than 5... more

The Seattle Times says Sound Transit Proposition 1 "retards our economy" and "hurts the poor" by boosting Washington’s sales tax to 9.5% , an unconscionable hike when "most people don’t want to get out of their cars." The Stranger says Prop. 1 is a great idea, and "If you think $69 is a lot to spend on transit in tough economic times, think about what you’ve been paying for gas lately." King County Exec Ron Sims is opposed and would prefer that we wait until 2010 . But w... more

When I talk about transportation, I keep coming back to one overarching theme. People will ask me what I think of biofuels, or a new bus route, or I’ll end up talking to someone about density or the design of a building, and they all fit together. What will keep working - what will still be here - in fifty years? In two hundred? In a thousand? Where can we make decisions now that will save the next generations from some of the disasters we’ve wrought? How can we build cities that w... more

The new $31.2 million center-freeway station in South Everett looks amazing (see photo above). Sound Transit built it. The new station will save buses from having to merge from the left lane to the exit, and then from the right lane into the carpool-lane, and also has 400 parking spots. Nice, though of course 400 spots seems to low, we should be building 1000-spot park-and-rides. Thanks to a $2.2 million FTA grant , Metro and Sound Transit are adding 12 more hybrid buses to th... more

This Brookings Study presented to Congress comes with this graph: Housing and Transportation makes up 57% of the income of those in “auto dependent suburbs” and just 41% in transit rich neighborhoods. If were spending 16% more of my income on transportation and housing, I would be pretty interested in building transit. Via Matt Yglesias . ... more
