Google added text-to-speech capabilities to some Knol articles, like the one titled “ File Formats in Digital Photography ”. You can download the MP3 as well as hit a Listen button in the top right. The quality of the speech output – I strongly suppose it’s all a software reading indeed, but asked Google for more background info in any case – is amazing. Macbeach in the comments at Google Operating System writes, “This is the best text-to-speech I’ve ever heard."* Knol’s help page on the subject explains, “We are experimenting with Audio Playback as an option for some knols, starting with a handful of English language featured knols ... If this experiment is successful, we may make Audio Playback available to more knols in additional languages, and additional features.” Both text-to-speech as in Knol, and speech-to-text as in YouTube (experimental too right now, and only working with videos of some U...

Below is what happened in search today, as reported on Search Engine Land and from other places across the web. From Search Engine Land: Anonymizing Google’s Server Log Data — How’s It Going? Back in March 2007, Google promised to begin anonymizing log data to better protect user privacy. That kicked off a wave of privacy pledges from competing search engines. In addition, by agreeing to limit itself, it inadvertently got the European Union to demand even faster... more

Feeds en Google Alerts
From: labrujulaverde.com
Post Date: 2008-10-29 05:20:34

Etherpad A team of ex-Googlers, with backing from Y Combinator, the Friendfeed founders and others, have created what might be both the ugliest and most useful group productivity app we’ve seen. Etherpad, a new product from Appjet, launches this morning, and you must try it out. It’s comparable to Google Docs or a wiki, but it’s far more useful. You start off by creating a new workspace. You type basic text on numbered lines at will. Then invite someone else in and hav... more
Does anyone use Microsoft Office Live Workspace?
From: ChristianWriters.com

A while back, I tried Google Docs for a while, really liked the concept of online sharing of files with crit partners....until I actually read the TOS. However, hubby bought me MS Office today, and in the process of installing it, I learned about Workspace. It seems to be everything I wanted in Google Docs without the pesky "we own anything you put into our software." So, has anyone used Workspace? Care to share your experience? Thanks, TL ... more

El G1 ha sido desbloqueado
From: bits20.com

Sencillamente impresionante.

The reports of escalating incidents of piracy off the coasts of Somalia have been getting a lot of attention in recent months. The piracy has been in all the news with the recent capture of a supertanker called "Sirius Star" and hostages of its 25 crew along with a full load of oil (worth over $150 million), and the capture of a cargo vessel and hostages carrying tanks a few weeks ago. Last month, Google Earth Community (GEC) member ’expedition’ created a very interesting m... more

Better Not Link to Google News Hosted Articles
From: blogoscoped.com
Post Date: 2008-09-19 11:22:12

Ever Since 2007, Google hosts stories by some news agencies like Associated Press as part of Google News. While many other news sites (e.g. CNN) carry stories by news agencies too, linking to Google News hosted stories seemed like a good idea if you like to point readers to an uncluttered version of the report. However, as Digital Inspiration points out and as Google explains in their help , these Google News articles disappear after 30 days – compare this article whi... more

Google Stopped Censoring Human Rights Watch in China
From: blogoscoped.com
Post Date: 2008-09-19 06:05:47

Entering site:hrw.org into Google China for a long time resulted in a censorship notice instead of a link to the Human Rights Watch organization (Google went live with a self-censored Google.cn in January 2006). Now when I enter that query into Google.cn, at least here from Germany, I get the real site and no censorship notice anymore. I don’t know when this happened, and why; perhaps Google received an updated blacklist from the Chinese government, perhaps something chan... more
