Trout Unlimited, Northwest Steelheaders and other conservation groups are making a concerted effort to update the 1872 Mining Law. According to the National Wildlife Federation: Under this law, mining takes precedence over all other public land uses, including fishing. The Secretary of the Interior is required to sell public land to mining companies, often foreign-owned, for as little as $2.50 per acre. Furthermore, mining companies pay no royalties for hard rock minerals — gold, copper and zinc — that belong to all citizens. It is estimated that since the 1872 Mining Law was enacted, the U.S. government has given away more than $245 billion through royalty-free mining and patenting. Over 40% of western headwaters are contaminated by mining pollution and 500,000 abandoned mines despoil the landscape. You don’t have to look far to see how this nightmare affects us in Oregon. It is one thing to want conciliation; it is an entirely other to claim it, after eating a big slice of humble pie. Senator Harry Reid announced on Tuesday that it was time to move forward and get back to work, after his failed attempt to humiliate Senator Joe Lieberman for exercising his freedom of speech. Reid bravely told his own story, involving a valiant effort to lock away and hide his anger — which he wasn’t that successful at doing. The entire reason the Lieberman witch-hun... more

Apparently in order to cover for the lack of Democratic votes in favor of bailing out the UAW, Nancy Pelosi requested a plan from the Big 3 before Congress gives them money for failing.  In Pelosi’s words, ” Until they show us the plan, we can not show them the money”  Isn’t that cute, a play on the old Wendy’s commercial with the grandmothers’ requesting proof of the beef prior to making the purchase. A quick check on the background of Nancy Pelosi and H... more

Fly fishing books: Fool’s Paradise by John Gierach

We’ve got a few copies of John Gierach’s latest book, Fool’s Paradise down at the shop. Stop by and pick one up if you’re a Gierach fan. We asked him a few questions while he was in Eugene back in May on his book tour. Gierach on fishing writers burning spots: Ed Engle has a saying, he won’t name a river he can roll cast across, and he can roll cast a hell of a long way. I tend to err on the side of caution. Mckenzie Sweet Spot Redux: Nice Trout Hooked, Landed
From: oregonflyfishingblog.com
Post Date: 2008-07-18 08:10:55

Yesterday Matt Stansberry, Nick Callero of the National Wildlife Federation and I headed up to one of my favorite areas of the mid-Mckenzie River.  I had fished there last weekend hooking large numbers of trout but no large trout and needed to change that. Matt and Nick got there first and caught a bunch of trout between them on the hopper dropper combination.  I started fishing a Stimulator with a Possie Bugger on point. The same trout that wouldn’t stay off the line a couple days ago ... more
Gear Review: Simms Keen River Wading Sandals

Let’s get this out of the way: I hate waders. This bias is based on the fact that mine almost always stink like mildew and crotch, they take about 2 minutes to put on (2 minutes I could be spending fishing) and I just love traveling light. That said, from May to October, you can find me waist deep in 55-degree water in nothing but shorts and sandals. For the past few years, I’ve been wearing a beat up pair of Merrell sandals . I recently decided to upgrade to the Simms K... more
Williamson River near Chiloquin “loaded” with big rainbows
From: oregonflyfishingblog.com
Post Date: 2008-07-20 07:20:18

Caddis Fly employee and guide Barrett Christiensen visited the Williamson River this past Friday.  He put the boat in at the public ramp in the town of Chiloquin and rowed upstream. By 8am he was swinging/stripping  small buggers, leaches and mega princes through the deep pools. As the sun rose higher and the fish showed less interest in the larger offerings. Barrett switched over to two smaller nymphs and a long leader. Dead drift indicator style fishing the riffled water leading into t... more
