What’s with the white spots on these Medjool Dates? Take a look at these pictures . I’ve eaten tons of Medjool dates in my life, from California and the Middle East, but I’ve never seen this. About 20-30% of the dates have these white dots on the bottom - and only on the bottom. They also appear to be right under the skin. Being adventurous, I’ve eaten a few and they haven’t made me sick or killed me - they actually taste perfect. But I’m still curious what these dots are (and if they’ll kill me a few weeks from now).

Need a headset for music AND landline phonecalls
From: ask.metafilter.com
Post Date: 2008-09-03 11:23:22

Is there a wireless headset that will let me listen to beautiful music from my computer as well as make/receive phonecalls on my landline? I spend all day listening to music from my Mac Pro using wireless headphones (Sennheiser RS120s; great for what they are). Problem: when the phone rings I have to whip off the headphones and pick up my cordless phone. This, technically speaking, is a pain in the rear. I’d love to have a wireless headset that could do both functions. For mu... more

Roadtrip filter: Driving from SF Bay Area to Lassen this weekend for camping. What are some cool things to see along the way? We’ll be driving up to Lassen Saturday and coming home Monday. We plan on leaving early in the morning Saturday and leaving late morning Monday. I think we’re set on things to do at Lassen, but I was wondering if anybody had suggestions of things to see along the way. Monuments, weird roadside attractions (like the Thing or the Trees of Mystery), ne... more
Can an Automator Workflow/App Find Itself?
From: ask.metafilter.com
Post Date: 2008-09-03 11:24:28

Obscure Mac geekery filter... On OS X Leopard, how can I get a reference to the current location of an Automator workflow/app in a shell script within that workflow? I’ve got a complex Automator workflow that currently has to move files in and out of various directories. Currently these directories live in a specific location that’s hard coded into the workflow. What I’d like to do is have the workflow be able to reference it’s own package and create the directories... more
Locating print of Yoshitaka Amano’s drawing of Gaiman’s Sandman
From: ask.metafilter.com
Post Date: 2008-09-03 11:24:31

I’m trying to locate a print of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman as drawn by Yoshitaka Amano. About seven or eight years ago, I picked up an art print at a local comic shop. It was right after Neil Gaiman’s "Dream Hunters" had just been published and is of a beautiful painting by Yoshitaka Amono of Gaiman’s Sandman. It’s done in earthy colors (reds and browns) and shows Sandman standing with his arm outstretched. I loved the print enough that I got it framed. Unf... more
