Is it fair to blame the White House for our country’s economic woes? I mean, just how much influence does the President of the United States wield over the economy? I had always thought that their influence was extremely limited in scope. Whether this belief is right or wrong, I do know this. When the economy is booming, they are the first to take the credit. And when things go horribly wrong, they are also the first ones blamed. Sheila Suess Kennedy, an associate professor of law and public policy at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Indianapolis, talked about the legacy of the 43rd President of The United States in Monday’s Indianapolis Star. She wrote:
Whatever their other differences, voters clearly can’t wait to be rid of George W. Bush . However, before we rush to bid a not-so-fond farewell to the Bush administration, it may be instructive to examine the legacy of the past seven years.
Suess Kennedy illustrated how bad the ec...

Nearing the bitter end of eight ruinous years in office, President Bush still won’t acknowledge a single substantive thing he did wrong. Asked if he had any regrets in a CNN interview yesterday, Bush copped to a few public-relations gaffes many years ago. His tone, however, was anything but apologetic. In fact, he seemed quite pleased with himself.

George Bush has wiggled his hips on stage in Liberia, held hands with Saudi Prince Abdullah, and tried to massage a fellow head of state. But one photo opportunity at this weekend’s Beijing Olympics made even the famously jocular US president cringe.
The loaded proposal came after Bush made a good play during practice with the women’s beach volleyball team. “Mr President, want to?” bikini-clad player Misty May-Treanor asked him.

Still, [Bush] acknowledged yesterday that the measure presents lawmakers with "a difficult vote" barely a month before the November elections. Polls show the bailout is hugely unpopular , and lawmakers have been inundated with calls and e-mails from angry constituents. That is a line taken from today’s page A1 article in the Washington Post , which like many articles this morning, asserts that the bailout is exceptionally unpopular and politcal dead weight to whomever might vote to pa... more
I’m a sucker when it comes to ice cream. I absolutely love it, even when it’s freezing outside. While I never turn away any kind of ice cream (“give it to Mikey, he’ll eat anything”) I often eat Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream from Vermont. According to their website , Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield met in 1963 in the 7th grade gym class in Merrick, New York (Long Island). They moved to Vermont in 1977 and completed a $5 correspondence course in ice cream-making from Pe... more

Yesterday, Barbara Hagenbaugh in USA Today talked about the significance of assessing the U.S. economy on a state-by-state basis. She wrote:
Despite the recent onslaught of negative news, it remains unclear whether the current state of affairs meets the economists’ definition of a recession: a widespread decline in economic activity lasting more than just a few months. As in politics, all economics is local .
As the debate rages on among economists whether or not the United States has e... more
