The July/August edition of Outreach Magazine includes a feature article by Tim Gaydos, Campus Pastor of Mars Hill Downtown Seattle . The article talks about the story, the vision, and the identity of this unique congregation.
In the following excerpt, Pastor Tim describes some of the ways God was working through Mars Hill Downtown before it even opened for Sunday services:
Already, I’ve seen people respond to our desire to serve, love and work for the betterment of the city. The same day The Seattle Times ran its front-page story on our downtown campus, I received a phone call from a guy who works in the condominium complex Brittany and I live in. He said that his ex-girlfriend was a go-go dancer at the Tabella [nightclub that previously occupied the church’s space] and to him, she represented his past life of debauchery and revelry (he has four children with four different women). When he read that the go-go dancers were leaving and Jesus was coming i...

A Sign From Heaven? From: downtownseattle.marshillchurch.org Post Date: 2008-10-24 15:15:15
It was an exciting week around Mars Hill Downtown as we got to see, not one sign, but two signs go up on the exterior of our building. We are grateful to a couple donors who graciously gave to the sign fund. Because of our limited budget we’ve had to raise funds specifically for this project, but what a crucial project it is, as I have talked with people in the city on almost a weekly basis that have no idea that 2333 Western Ave is Mars Hill Church.
So, now the thousands of people who... more

I was walking around 4th avenue in Downtown Seattle this past weekend and found a boutique that I was, frankly, flabbergasted that I had not noticed it before. Brought to you by Kimberly and Carrie Arrington, Clutch, (as it claims) is Seatte’s only handbag boutique. I checked it out and am happy to say that their selection is quite lovely. The boutique is the home to a plethora of independent designers whom I love like Dautore, Gustto, Kooba, Boy Meets Girl…and the li... more
This morning George Will warns that New New Deal policies might work no better than the Old New Deal policies. And David Broder points out something we brought up here the other day: States and localities (is that the word I want?) are getting hammered by the recession and are cutting back services dramatically. When I was in Seattle the newspapers had banner headlines about a $5 billion state budget shortfall. Unlike the federal government, a state government usually has to balance the... more
“The Name Game” at Football Rumor Mill focuses on active coaching searches around the country. The latest edition centers on the Washington Huskies…
The candidacy of Fresno State’s Pat Hill for the Washington coaching job may have taken a more serious turn Saturday. A Washington football source told The Times that Hill interviewed with UW officials on Saturday. The Fresno Bee reported on its Fresno State football blog that Hill boarded a flight to Seattle early Saturday morning,... more
ALONG HOOD CANAL — To begin to explain Richard Pauletti’s collection of some 150,000 newspapers, let’s just say he’s in love with what they represent to him.
They speak to him.
Pauletti has copies of just about every Seattle Times and every Seattle Post-Intelligencer published for the past 38 years, plus copies of newspapers from numerous other cities.
When you’ve got that many papers, they eventually need to be lugged around, as maybe a storage are... more
The Seattle Times and City Club sponsored yesterday’s debate between Rob McKenna and John Ladenburg, which was hosted at Seattle University as part of the school’s Social Justice Week program. Times crack reporter Bob Young reports on how it all went down. We’ll cut straight to the important part: neither are for legalization of marijuana, and in fact McKenna wants to reclassify pot as a "more serious drug" thanks to BC growers’ potent strains. ... more

Marathon becomes metaphor in this story of the everyman’s desperate flight from role and responsibility. Although the story is as old as the sin of Adam, this story - written by Simon Pegg and Michael Ian Black , directed by David S... more

Today I was refreshed and reminded of God’s grace within the women of Mars Hill, especially in the life of Jen Zug, who just made a wonderful post on the West Seattle blog.
Sometimes it is easy for me to tunnel-vision with my little world and see the problems I have to work through. It is so encouraging to look up and across the wider horizon - to spin around in a circle and gaze deeply into the past and future… because the grace of God is evident everywhere.
