The fallout continues from Sarah Palin claiming she opposed that famous bright to nowhere, and that new McCain-Palin ad – the Original Mavericks – where the claim is that “she stopped the bridge to nowhere.” She did, all by herself, bravely facing down the world?   That is just not so. See Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo with Lying Sarah Watch , a careful analysis, summarized by Michael Crowley here :   Palin was for the bridge until she realized that Washin... more

If politicians know one thing, they know this. Explaining things that you yourself don’t understand can get you in trouble – explaining economics, for example.   People listen politely, then someone in the back, sensing that they’re hearing nonsense, smiles. You catch that smile in the corner of your eye, and plow on, trying to be forceful and compelling, as best you can. It might have been nothing – someone thinking of their child. But then you hear a cough in a far corn... more

It was about ten years ago, on the third or fourth solo trip to Paris to kick around for a few weeks and feel more at home than is possible here in Hollywood – where no one ever feels at home – that something seemed strange. Don’t concern yourself why a twice-divorced systems guy raised in Pittsburgh, educated in Ohio and North Carolina and living in Hollywood, always felt that that first afternoon in Paris, fresh off the overnight non-stop from Los Angeles and sipping cognac at dus... more
