NPR did a segment on the Bechdel Test a couple days ago. It was created by awesome cartoonist Alison Bechdel  (”Dykes to Watch Out For”, “Fun Home,”) in this comic , where one of the characters says that she only watches a movie if: 1) The movie contains more than one female character; 2) Who talk to each other; 3) About something besides a man. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Nope. The Bechdel Test is surprisingly hard to satisfy. Pixar movies mostly fail , with the exception of the Incredibles and A Bug’s Life. Pretty much any big mainstream popcorn-action movie (The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Spiderman, Hellboy, Transformers, Indiana Jones, James Bond) - fail . The Bechdel Test has spawned other tests: From NPR : The Deggans Rule - 1. At least two nonwhite characters in the main cast…2. in a show that’s not about race. The Morales Rule - 1. EcoFactor: A rickshaw that can be powered by both pedal power and solar energy designed to encourage green transport. A ride on rickshaw today brings back some really fond memories. There was a time, not more than a decade ago, when they were still a means of transportation in my own city. Since then, they seem to have been just phased out slowly but surely. It is really nice to know that beyond the big cities in India, there are still many who depend on these pollution-free vehicles ... more

Eco Factor: A concept kitchen crafted out of bio-degradable plastic and recycled wood. There is an old saying that “Cleanliness begins at home”, but we at EcoFriend are going to change that a little by saying that “EcoFriendliness begins at home”. Trying to help us in this saying is Indian designer Nilay Shah, who along with Italian kitchen brand Veneta Cucine, has come up with an ingenious concept kitchen dubbed the I Green. This multipurpose kitchen, which can be used for c... more

Alas. A roll of the d20 for the man who gave us Dungeons & Dragons, the game (and language) of many a socially dysfunctional youth. He died today at 69. Oh,  I can’t resist quoting the way CNN described Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that̵... more

The hobbit-people of Flores may just be stunted cretins with hypothyroidism , says a new study. (Apparently “cretinism” is an actual disease involving a deficient thyroid gland.) Or maybe the hobbit-people didn’t listen to Oprah and “swallowed too many words they were aching to say,” leading to their thyroid breakdown & teeny size. Oh, well. We’ll have to go elsewhere for our ring-destroying needs. Photo from the National Geographic hobb... more

I am in the midst of writing My First NSF Proposal (Wudda lil’ scientist! Though actually it’s a mock proposal for a class). So in lieu of actual content, here is series of links themed “Marine Mammals: They will &%$@ You Up!” British couple gets too close to a anxious humpback momma in Hawaii, almost made into krill Orca has either bad aim or a wicked sense of humor - what IS it with kayakers? Buffy the Vampire Slayer has made some mainstream news (spoilers in the link) with the latest volume of Buffy: Season 8. Since the whole silly to-do relies on spoilers, I’m not going to launch into it until after the jump. Since I need to fill some space for layout reasons, I’ll take this moment to inform the Whedon loving geek cosmos that Joss will begin filming the pilot of his next show, Dollhouse, on April 23. Well, plot-wise all you need to know is over the... more
