During a recent weekly meeting, our team was considering what peripherals we could offer to coworkers. There’s the obvious list — monitors, chargers, that sort of thing. But when the question was put to me — What is it I’d most like — I said silence. To which Julie immediately responded noise canceling headphones.
I mention this conversation because it’s interesting to me how one space is going to be able to meet an array of very different needs, some of which seem mutually exclusive. A big part of the idea of coworking is that it collaboration and camaraderie are highly encouraged. Which involves talking. So why would someone like me, who loves working in complete silence, even go to a coworking space?
That’s easy. Just because I like quiet doesn’t mean I like isolation. I dig having others around, also working. For one thing, it helps me keep my butt in the chair (as opposed to frequent breaks from the my office at home, during which I do such productive t...

An interview with Alex HillmanFrom: blog.launchpadcoworking.com
Post Date: 2008-03-21 10:32:27
We asked Alex Hillman , a real coworking leader, co-founder of IndyHall in Philadelphia, and web developer/strategist/co-founder of Round3Media to tell us about his perspective on the scene
Spike Gillespie: How’d you get involved in coworking?
Alex Hillman: I was introduced to coworking by Chris Messina and Tara Hunt, who run Citizen Space . I was recently independent, and had begun working at home. Quickly, my longing for people came back. After a failed attempt to mo...

Admit it. You figured this was going to be another “OMG I overdid it at SXSW” post, didn’t you? Well, you couldn’t be more wrong.
It all started a few weeks ago. The Core77 Design blog pointed me to a very cool little company called Giant Microbes . They make stuffed animals. Actually, stuffed microbes. Black Death, Mange, Mad Cow. All sorts of cuddly microbes organized into categories like Venerials, Exotics, Calamities, and Maladies.
Each microbe is available...

The good news: SXSWi has launched a UserVoice forum soliciting feedback from folks who attended the conference. The bad news: the site requires yet another registration. Separate from the conference. And the insiders guide. And the badge/member list stuff. Was there another?
I suggested coworking panels and a coworking area for next year. And a revamp of their site UI.
Sign up. Vote. Let’s get coworking on the agenda big time next year. You can suggest and vote without regi...

SXSWi was great for coworking. We had coworkers from all over the map in town to… well, cowork about coworking. But it sure didn’t feel like work as we gathered twice at the Hotel San Jose, twice for core conversations (one on transparency and the other on coworking), and unofficially at BarCamp (“unofficial” since they can’t call it a SXSW event).
I’ll talk about transparency in a separate post and Spike will give a report on the second San Jose meetup. For ...
