Chicago gets tough on drugs: Tiny plastic bags used to sell small quantities of heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana and other drugs would be banned in Chicago, under a crackdown advanced Tuesday by a City Council committee. Ald. Robert Fioretti (2nd) persuaded the Health Committee to ban possession of “self-sealing plastic bags under two inches in either height or width,” after picking up 15 of the bags on a recent Sunday afternoon stroll through a West Side park. Lt. Kevin Navarro, commanding officer of the Chicago Police Department’s Narcotics and Gang Unit, said the ordinance will be an “important tool” to go after grocery stores, health food stores and other businesses. Next year, look for a ban on bags “slightly larger than those we banned last year.”

Chicago police head outlines anti-gang plan CHICAGO (AP) - The head of the nation’s second-largest police department says he is establishing a new unit to deal with gang slayings, which he blames for a murder rate that eclipses that of New York and Los Angeles. Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis told aldermen Friday that he was setting up the Mobile Strike Force to attack the city’s gangs. The unit will be comprised of roughly 150 veteran officers divided into about a dozen teams and... more
Indifference Allowed Torture to Persist in Chicago

In 1982, Chicago's Dailey administration was indifferent to reports that "police killer Andrew Wilson's face looked normal going into an interrogation room, but resembled ground beef hours later." A few years later, the Chicago Police Department was indifferent when a police watchdog "raised serious questions about the electro-shocking of suspects." In 1990, another watchdog "catalogued 50 cases of alleged police torture." The police department suppressed the report and retaliated ... more

A glance at the Illinois headlines today quickly illustrates how the economic crisis is rippling across the state. Food pantries in Bloomington are " seeing more demand, but fewer supplies " and are cutting back their offerings a result.  The state, meanwhile, announced a $500,000 appropriation to the Illinois Food Bank Association to help alleviate this problem.  Food pantries in the Prairie State saw " a 30 percent increase in people needing food " ... more

Obama vs. Hillary

My colleague Jacob Sullum notes that Republicans crossing over may have given Hillary her win in Texas last night.  That would seem to jibe with the tacit support she seems to be garnering on right-wing blogs. As I wrote several months ago, it would be really stupid for the Democrats to nominate her.  Obama will whip McCain.  Hillary may be the GOP’s last hope of retaining the White House. The other reason I think the pro-war right is flocking to Hillary is that, like President... more

The national Innocence Project and the Mississippi Innocence Project have sent open records requests to every district attorney in the state of Mississippi. The request asks for a copy of every autopsy embattled medical examiner Steven Hayne has performed on their behalf at Mississippi’s state crime lab facility in Jackson. Though Hayne is not a state employee, he began conducting his marathon, all-night autopsy sessions at the state facility a few years ago. In the 15 or so years... more

Not one , but two scandals this week. Be interesting to see how it affects the voting for David Hernandez or Amanda Overmeyer. On to the show. It was 80s night last night. My live-ish review: Luke Menard — Never sing a song that sent a contestant home early in previous years, particularly if you’re hanging by a thread yourself. Sang Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” a really awful song that’s somehow fitting for this guy’s milquetoast on... more
