At the rate this is going , by the time November 4th rolls around, John McCain won’t have any allies in the traditional media left to throw under the bus . Yesterday on Fox News Sunday, Bill Kristol said John McCain’s campaign has really become "a pathetic campaign." In his New York Times op-ed this morning, Kristol went further, suggesting that McCain should "fire his campaign" and "start over." Asked to respond to Kristol’s criticisms, McCain campaign spokeswoman Nancy Pfotenhauer said on Fox News: Well, you know Bill is entitled to his perspective. And I used to work for Bill. And I can tell you personally sometimes he’s brilliant and sometimes he’s not. And this is one where it’s the latter category. You know, I think unfortunately he has bought into the Obama campaign’s party line. What’s this? Bill Kristol has joined the ranks of the New York Times and Politico as being "in the tank" for Obama? And this j...

Though it’s too early to know for sure whether the New York Times will renew columnist Bill Kristol’s contract, George Packer has an excellent summation of why he should be let go . As others have noticed, Kristol just never seemed to take the job seriously:
It’s time for the newspaper to move on. For Pinch Sulzberger and Andy Rosenthal to renew Kristol’s one-year contract, in 2009, would be for the Times to reward failure—and look where that got Wall Street and General Mot... more
Thanks to Jay for pointing to George Packer's post on the New Yorker's website echoing a call I made a few weeks ago: the NY Times really, really needs to fire William Kristol from the op-ed page (or, more precisely, not renew his one-year contract). Here's Packer's case -- he deserves enormous credit for burrowing through the Kristol archives to unearth a year's worth of malfeasance in punditry: For Pinch Sulzberger and Andy Rosenthal to renew Kristol’s... more

Ullrich Fichtner at Der Spiegel writes: Why NATO Troops Can’t Deliver Peace in Afghanistan Good days are in short supply in Afghanistan, a country at war -- or involved in several wars, to be exact. There is constant fighting on many fronts, hard and soft. The newspapers, and there are many of them in Kabul now, serve up pages of chaotic images every day. Their reports are about bombs and drinking water, holy warriors and wheat prices, NATO air attacks and schoolbooks, kidna... more

(Promoted from the diaries by kos) I’m sorry. I simply can’t take some of what I’m hearing on cable news as they cover the Clinton win in Puerto Rico and continue to repeat Clinton campaign talking points in her "rationale" to secure the Democratic Presidential nomination. In the past three or four hours I have heard Harold Ickes, Terry McAuliffe, and Bill Schneider (CNN political analyst) repeatedly assert that Clinton is winning the popular vote... more
So the Chicago Cubs have the best record in baseball, while the Tampa Bay Rays have the second best (while leading the American League East). The Yankees have been hovering in and just barely out of last place. Hell hasn’t frozen over just yet. The season is less than 1/3rd of the way done. But global warming doesn’t appear to be having an impact in the netherworld. This is an open thread, but one in which trash talking about yodur favorite teams is particularly encour... more
