…but I feel compelled to share it anyway. The Mister wakes up before me every day. Every day I shimmy into the living room to find him glued to the computer. Usually he’s listening to NPR and reading the New York Times. Not yesterday. This is what I saw my husband looking at with rapt interest: One would think someone from Portsmouth’s P.R. Department would pick up on the unintended(?) nuance this advertisement has— or maybe that was the intent? The is the Royal Navy we are talking about after all. The folks who invented “ impressment “. Miss Heather Photo Credit: The Register

We received a petition asking: “We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to order ten type 45 destroyers for the Royal Navy and consider twelve.” Details of Petition: “A strategic defence review of Royal Navy tasks and requirements considered twelve destroyers the minimum that could do the work. The government have ordered HALF that amount and are reluctant to order any more. On the lowest proportion of defence spending since the early 1930s, we have ordered six ... more

Just got a letter through about this. AMAZING choice of venue. An exhibition in 3 sections. *European encounters in the Pacific, including the first descriptions of it, the significance of the tattoo in polynesian societies and the response of British sailors to different types of tattooing. *The way in which tattooing became popular among merchant seamen and Royal Navy sailors and eventually within groups on the fringes of society, as well as sailors’ traditions and comme... more

The Honeysuckle Diaries

This evening my husband and I trekked to Long Island City so we give Manducatis a taste test. It was a very enjoyable dining experience, but that will be the subject of another (yet to be written) post. About a block away from this establishment (on Jackson Avenue) a sign caught my eye. Come to think of it, this item wasn’t so much a sign as it was a stream of consciousness polemic about Long Island City’s missing honeysuckle. Among other things. ... more

I found this festive (if dessicated) pile of shit on West Street just across from what used to be part of the Eberhard Faber pencil factory complex. Since I am (somewhat) on the subject of senseless destruction of neighborhood landmarks, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this. I realize the above graphic is pretty shitty. Located at 678 Manhattan Avenue, J.S.S. Fruit & Vegetable is easily the best produce stand in the ‘hood. Not only are the pickings fresh and reasonably priced, but the people who operate this establishment are painfully nice. The gent who usually mans the cash register is always happy. I’m not too sure why, but I doubt medication (self-prescribed and otherwise) is involved. Rather, I think his beatific state is the result of being the keeper of the most BADASS au... more

Thursday I had a truly amazing idea. I am still downright giddy in the afterglow of its sheer brilliance. In fact, I have been prancing around the apartment mirthfully giggling to myself for hours. Not since starting New York Shitty have I been as psyched about something as I am about this. Who or what do I have to thank for this yet-to-be-announced breakthrough, you ask? This guy . It happened like this… My morning started on a rather inauspicious note: immediately after wak... more
