As part of my new “retiring on the job” plan, I’ve managed to get a schedule with no classes on Tuesday or Thursday for the first half of the semester. Yep, that’s me. Three days a week. I’m going to get a lot of research done.
Of course, this is partly because I have a web class, so I’ll be putting in a fair amount of teaching time outside the classroom too. But I’ve taught it several times before, so it’s well organized.
Today I turned in two reviews of scientific papers on Cuphea. It’s a plant genus that I used to work on, back before I started doing fungal stuff. My old friend Dennis Ray is editor of Industrial Crops and Products, and he emailed me right around Christmas to ask if I’d review these papers, since there aren’t a lot of people with any Cuphea expertise around. So I did, but it turns out that what they really needed was someone with heavy statistics expertise. I’m not that u...

In September 2007, a phase II HIV-1 vaccine trial was abruptly halted when researchers found that the vaccine may have promoted, rather than prevented, HIV infection. Graduation From: gathkinsons.net Post Date: 2006-05-16 11:28:24
Well, after an unscheduled outage (somebody hacked my site), I’m back. Sophie graduated! It was fun — the whole family was together briefly, a rare occurrence. We ate lots of good food. Now Sophie is looking for a job. It’s kind of amazing that she’s grown up for real. *Sigh*. I’m old.

Robin’s Mom From: gathkinsons.net Post Date: 2006-05-17 09:35:52
Betsy, Robin’s mother, is in the hospital. She had a heart attack about 2 AM on Tuesday. She didn’t call us at the time, or in fact at all, because she didn’t want to bother us. Finally she did call the nurse at her retirement home, and the nurse called us, and Robin took her to the emergency room at about 4 in the afternoon.
She had an angiogram, and the cardiologist says that although there was substantial damage to her heart, there wasn’t any clot when they ... more
Hello world! From: gathkinsons.net Post Date: 2006-05-24 05:36:00
Yes, I’ve changed to a new ISP, and I haven’t figured out how to restore my blog from the downloaded database. In fact, it appears that the MySql versions from the two ISPs may not be compatible, and I may not be able to do the restore at all. Meanwhile, I’m just trying to get the site back up. More to come.

So I’d been having intermittent bouts of stabbing pain in my left hip for a couple of weeks… no, really, stabbing — the sensation seems a lot like having someone jab me with an icepick. Anyway, I finally decided last Friday that I would call a friend of mine from choral union who is a chiropractor. Unlike a “real” doctor, apparently a chiropractor (this one, anyway) can see you THAT VERY DAY. So I went in and his assistant took X-rays. Damn, is my spine... more
