Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson announced an education plan today. She wants: Free books, including a new one for every child, every month until they’re five years old. Give high school students five years to graduate. Send more students to college by expanding the 21st Century Scholars program. The Department of Education says it will cost taxpayers an additional $10,000 for each student who spends 5 years rather than the traditional 4-year period to complete high school. Last week, the National Education Association contributed $100,000 to Thompson’s campaign. Does anyone think there is anything in Thompson’s proposal that is not supported by the teacher’s union? indiana politics gay GLBT law

Democratic 7th District candidate Andre Carson is already under fire in his bid to take his grandmother’s place in Congress for refusing to repudiate an endorsement he received from controversial Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Now Carson is relying on the help of a Washington-based Muslim leader who has been highly critical of an important U.S. ally, Israel. U.S. Rep. Dan Burton’s GOP primary opponent, Dr. John McGoff, gets a big boost via a rather unflattering portrait of the incumbent Burton in the column by Star political reporter Matt Tully. Tully writes of Burton: McGoff is running against an incumbent who has repeatedly embarrassed his constituents and his state. Actually, his opponent is perhaps the premier embarrassment in all of Congress -- and that’s saying something. Burton was elected in 1982 and has made a mockery of h... more

As the Indianapolis airwaves and voters’ mailboxes become filled with messages urging you to support 7 th District Democratic congressional candidate, you might want to consider who is helping finance Carson’s campaign. As Advance Indiana reported yesterday, a nationally-known Muslim activist with anti-Israel views, organized a recent fundraiser for Carson in our nation’s capital, a fact that has gone unmentioned in local news media reports. What I find particularly troubl... more
