The man plunged 80ft after falling through the side window of a cable car returning to the Chamonix ski resort in the French Alps.
The incident was described by the ski resort operator as unprecedented, requiring force to have been applied to the cable car’s window.
“There was a bit of messing about. In principle, there was no fight but they are talking about a rumpus and jostling,” said Axelle Le Boulicaut, from the local prosecutor’s office.
“We don’t know if there was a push or not from someone because there are still contradictions on this point,” she added.
Ms Le Boulicaut added the three suspects were being held for an extra 24 hours because of the discrepancies.
The ski lift operator for Chamonix, La Compagnie de Mont Blanc, said such an accident had “never occurred in the world of ski lifts”.
