The TiVo HD is a good, cheap alternative to the recently de-listed TiVo Series 3 for people who didn’t need all that much storage and all that many fancy features. But what if someone wants even more built-in storage than the 20 hours of HD that the TiVo HD provides? They’ve now got the TiVo HD XL. This beast offers 150 hours of HD recording, plus it’s THX certified; useful not for watching Rachel Ray’s spunky explanations, but for Jack Bauer action packed video and audio. (We watch Rachel on mute.) The XL also has the same dual-tuner HD recording as the previous models, plus all the same expanded non-TV features: photos, YouTube, Amazon Unbox, Rhapsody and Music Choice, the music video service. The only downside to all this increased storage is that the box costs $600, the same price as the TiVo Series 3 after the first price cut; but it does come with a Series 3 backlit remote. galleryPost(’tivohdxl’, 5, ’’); ...

Transfer lifetime From: tivocommunity.com Post Date: 2008-12-02 09:00:09
I am going to buy a Tivo HD Xl from best buy today to go
with Verizon FIOS being installed in a couple of days.
I have told verizon that I needed two cable cards to be installed.
Are there any glitches with FIOS that I should be aware of ?
I already have a single tuner TIVO series 2, with lifetime.
Is there a way I can transfer the lifetime service to the new TIVO HD ?
Thanks ... more
I’m STILL on the fence about getting a Tivo HD XL. Dual tuners, HD support, and enough hard drive space to actually USE HD...
But...I’ve heard nothing but horror stories about Tivo2Go with HD content. Just recently I read another thing that they couldn’t transfer anything over 30 minutes. Plus I’d switch to over the air, which may not be the cleanest signal... ... more
I have a Tivo HD, and just had FIOS TV (and internet and phone) installed. Everything seems to work fine, except that some of the Extreme HD channels don’t work. If you tune to them, you get a black screen and no audio, but no message saying "Channel not available; contact your cable provider" or whatever.
Tivo tech support went through the Cablecard diagnostics and found that on the channels that are black, the cards are reporting "NOT_SUBSCRIBED" under the Conditional Access sectio... more
Normal? From: tivocommunity.com Post Date: 2008-11-30 20:43:20
For many years I had a Tivo Series 1 that worked exactly as advertised with 100% reliability so when I decided to buy a Tivo Series 3 about a year ago, though the price was high, I did it without fear. Yesterday I returned the box for the third time in a year. Each time it briefly exhibited erratic symptoms then completely stopped working. Is this normal? I love the Series 3 when it is working, but if I had a car this unreliable I would have traded it in months ago. My impression is the Ti... more

Because we didn’t want you to sleep well tonight, we would like you to meet Stelarc’s Walking Head Robot. Sitting atop six piston-powered legs, an LCD screen displays a creepy animated face to lull you into submission once the robot sees you with its ultrasound sensors. It then makes faces as if to trick you into believing it’s really not here to destroy you and yours like some monster from The Thing. It would be one thing if the Walking Head R... more
iPhone 3G Campers. Devoted fans or masochistic screwballs? We don’t have the answer, but we don’t have enough evidence yet. That’s where you come in. We want you to send in pictures of the first person in line at Apple stores and cellphone stores around the world so we can see just what kind of testicular fortitude it takes to sit in the cold for two days just for a phone. And yes, testicular, because women aren’t stupid enough to do this. At least, not unless someone... more
It looks as though an Italian company named V12 Design might beat the OLPC’s XO-2 laptop to the dual touchscreen punch with their dual LCD laptop called the Canova. According to Laptopmag , V12 developed its design four years ago and is currently working on a second generation version with a US manufacturer. The plan is to have the device on the market within 16 months. An interview with Valerio Cometti, the founder and managing director of V12 Design, confirmed that the upcoming ve... more
