Hot on the heels of their renewed DirecTV relations , TiVo unveils a new stand-alone unit for cable (or OTA antenna) customers. The $600 TiVo HD XL will be available from TiVo.com today, followed by appearances at Amazon.com and Magnolia stores in the coming weeks.
I recently spent some time with a production TiVo HD XL unit and, as you can see, it looks quite similar to the existing TiVo HD. The obvious differences are the inclusion of a Glo Remote and a significantly higher capacity 1 terabyte drive - over 150 hours of HD recording, versus 20 provided by a standard TiVo HD. The XL’s $300 premium also gets you THX certification - something previously seen on the TiVo Series3 ( RIP ) and perhaps a draw for the higher-end consumer (think CEDIA ) they’re targeting with this model.
The internals appear pretty much the same, although I did notice some model number and chip manufacturer variations. And despite the larger (...

Transfer lifetimeFrom: tivocommunity.com
Post Date: 2008-12-02 09:00:09
I am going to buy a Tivo HD Xl from best buy today to go
with Verizon FIOS being installed in a couple of days.
I have told verizon that I needed two cable cards to be installed.
Are there any glitches with FIOS that I should be aware of ?
I already have a single tuner TIVO series 2, with lifetime.
Is there a way I can transfer the lifetime service to the new TIVO HD ?
Thanks ...

Does Tivo 2 Go work flawlessly yet on Tivo HD/S3?From: tivocommunity.com

I’m STILL on the fence about getting a Tivo HD XL. Dual tuners, HD support, and enough hard drive space to actually USE HD...
But...I’ve heard nothing but horror stories about Tivo2Go with HD content. Just recently I read another thing that they couldn’t transfer anything over 30 minutes. Plus I’d switch to over the air, which may not be the cleanest signal... ...

Strange missing channel prob with FIOS + Cablecard + Tivo HDFrom: tivocommunity.com

I have a Tivo HD, and just had FIOS TV (and internet and phone) installed. Everything seems to work fine, except that some of the Extreme HD channels don’t work. If you tune to them, you get a black screen and no audio, but no message saying "Channel not available; contact your cable provider" or whatever.
Tivo tech support went through the Cablecard diagnostics and found that on the channels that are black, the cards are reporting "NOT_SUBSCRIBED" under the Conditional Access sectio...

Normal?From: tivocommunity.com
Post Date: 2008-11-30 20:43:20
For many years I had a Tivo Series 1 that worked exactly as advertised with 100% reliability so when I decided to buy a Tivo Series 3 about a year ago, though the price was high, I did it without fear. Yesterday I returned the box for the third time in a year. Each time it briefly exhibited erratic symptoms then completely stopped working. Is this normal? I love the Series 3 when it is working, but if I had a car this unreliable I would have traded it in months ago. My impression is the Ti...

Mary Jo at ZDNet is reporting that Microsoft has begun testing Fiji, the next iteration of Vista Media Center.
You may remember rumblings last year about this time that the Windows Media Center Fiji Update would be delayed until 2008 . Well it sure was - matter of fact it could be the end of 2008 or even beginning of 2009 before it actually sees the light of day.
According to rumors, the update will include support for the yet-to-be released DirecTV satellite tuner and other unknown &...

The Ultimate Remote ArrivesFrom: feeds.feedburner.com

Looking for an alternative to the Harmony ? It now exists. As I was leaving the floor at the Cable Show, I got the lowdown on the new Ultimate Remote from tvCompass . In a quick demo I was particularly impressed with the TV Guide EPG rendering - not an easy thing to get right on such a small screen. Even more important, however: the remote is WiFi-enabled , meaning plenty of extras like messaging and content applications. It’s launching with ESPN and associated sports content, ...

NBC Launches Interactive Ads on DISH NetworkFrom: feeds.feedburner.com

Similar to TiVo’s “Thumbs Up” advertising , DISH Network customers will shortly be presented with interactive ads from NBC. However, instead of DISH driving advertising sales it appears that the network will leverage their existing advertisers to broker deals and/or as a means of driving traffic to their own TV properties. From the press release :
NBC Universal [14 networks] will offer the ability to purchase advertisements with interactive trigger capabilities as a way to...

TiVo Nearing Subscription-Free Australian LaunchFrom: feeds.feedburner.com

According to the Sydney Morning Herald :
THE Seven Media Group will launch its TiVo digital video recorder in July after a strategic overhaul that includes a surprise move to scrap a planned monthly subscription fee for the broadband-enabled service. TiVo’s launch plan comes as Seven’s wireless broadband group, Unwired, confirmed it was finalising deals with up to six retailers around the country to sell TiVo boxes. “The main thing is to get TiVo launched for the Ol...
