I strongly favor women in politics, and when in doubt will vote for a woman’s name where I’m not adequately familiar with the issues/candidates on that portion of the ballot. Exception, of course, being women of the Republican party – sorry, ma’am; ma’am. An exception to that exception was the mother of a close friend and associate some years back, for whom I voted (over a Democrat – whom I didn’t know – because she’d raised a good (and adopted) son) back in the early nineties. (Also voted for a Green woman, who still lost, more recently.)Â
I state without a quibble that I am a fem...

ALWAYS on the prowl for fresh ways of attracting people to their bizarre and unnatural activities, predatory Catholic bishops have hit on the idea of targeting foetuses.
We know Catholic priests like 'em young, but this is outrageous
According this report a new prayer of blessing has been approved by American Bishops for babies in the womb.
The new prayer, they say, fills a gap in existing prayer books.

Re-reading Sean O’Casey’s Three Plays ahead of going to see a production of The Plough and the Stars on Thursday, it is hard to imagine now that O’Casey’s work once provoked protests and rioting. O’Casey was eventually driven into exile, leaving Ireland in 1938 and never returning before his death in 1964.
An Ireland controlled by Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, who, as Archbishop of Dublin, effectively ruled the country for thirty years from 1940, had no plac... more

Having just finished watching the Obama-McCain debate (Barack was rock-steady and solidly on message; John… well, still seemed even at best nearly desperate, and clearly obstinately petty, and arguably overdue for retirement), I’m actually going to veer away from both politics and faith issues, and report a cautionary tale.Â

As I begin writing here, I’m streaming and listening to EWTN’s “ Sunday Night Live With Father Benedict Groeschel “. This man is a living saint: loving, compassionate, deeply intelligent, intensely spiritual, beautifully humble, and supremely hard-working on the side of the weakest, neediest, and most neglected. On this particular episode, he and his guest are discussing abortion.Â
