How very tiresome that reactionary members of Zionist lobbies (how many profit from, or are friends with those who profit from, the arms and munitions industry, I wonder?) persist in persecuting rational observers of the continuing human rights abuses of the Israeli government against the long-suffering (40 years and counting) Palestinians. Not content with hounding top-flight academics like Norman Finkelstein (who was "retired" from his position at DePaul University) and Juan Cole (whose offer from Yale was withdrawn), pro-Israel-no-matter-what attack dogs have now scuttled a talk at the University of St. Thomas---thanks to the helpful interference of University President "Father knows best" Dennis Dease---by Desmond Tutu, winner of the Nobel Peace prize, among other accolades.
As if this supression of reasoned observation weren't outrageous enough, the cancellation was accompanied by the removal of Cris Toffolo, the chair of...

Sex on Campus? By J.R. Goddard
"Campus sex" may not be for all students, but why not condone it for those sufficiently grown-up to know what they’re doing?
That’s the question biology professor Leo F. Koch (pronounced Cook) asked at the University of Illinois last spring. University President David D. Henry was a fast man with an answer. He promptly fired Koch for his "offens... more

So, I am currently a freshman at a DePaul University in Chicago and I’m absolutely hating it. I’m originally from Minnesota (7 hours from Chicago) & I’m finding it is close to impossible to get home for a visit. This is not what I thought college would be like at all. It isn’t the stereotypical college experience you see in the movies. I have made no true contacts here in the 3 months that I have been living here. I have recently applied to the University of Minnesot... more

ah, GreenBuild From: hoklife.com Post Date: 2008-11-21 20:22:27
I just wrapped up a long week at GreenBuild , the penultimate green building conference in the U.S., possibly the world. Yes, I am exhausted, but also invigorated. Big props to the USGBC for a superb conference that was extremely well organized, even in the face of about 30,000 attendees. Also, for having the adorable, lovely and giant-hearted Archibishop Desmond Tutu speak at the opening plenary. Often at conferences we get the rockstars with the bigtime resumes and egos to match.... more

On Remembrance Day From: wilsonhellie.typepad.com Post Date: 2007-11-12 18:41:12
*CANADA** IS AT WAR *
Canada is at war right now.
We barely know why.
At school we never talk about it
For math is on our minds.
We always say we will remember
When 'Remembrance Day' is here.
But once this day is done
We go back to our school year.
World War One was said to be
"The war to end all wars."
In World War Two, "Never again"
Would we die on foreign shores.
But we are fighting in Af... more
Celebrating torture From: wilsonhellie.typepad.com Post Date: 2007-11-08 13:47:29
From Jim John: An article in defense of torture as US policy by someone named Deroy Murdock appeared in the National Review Online this Monday. It features the astonishing remark that "[w]aterboarding is something of which every American should be proud." [Murdock also says "In short, there is nothing “repugnant” about waterboarding".] I'm not making this up. The article can be read here:

This post has lots of treats, including the cool Women's Voices. Women Vote. (yes, that's an irritating name) video with all those awesome women in the Oval office (including one of my fav bloggers--- Digby of Hullabaloo). Cached in there is an interesting statistic: Recent polling in particular indicates that unmarried women, for the first time a larger demographic than married women, vote more heavily
for Dems than practically any other group. ... more
Musharraf imposes military rule : Musharraf, who took power in a 1999 coup and is also head of Pakistan's
army, suspended the constitution on Saturday ahead of a Supreme Court
ruling on whether his recent re-election as president was legal. He
ousted seven independent-minded Supreme Court judges, put a
stranglehold on independent media and granted sweeping powers to
authorities to crush dissent. One small difference: Bush would probably keep the complicit Supreme Court who anti-de... more
