When I first heard the word " microformat ", I have to admit that I thought about, well, a micro format.  Making something small and more specific, to be precise.  It wasn't until I actually sat down and looked at the wikipedia article that I got even a decent understanding for what they were, although what they were and understanding the uses of them was still something a bit out of reach.  I was, of course, working on this for a client and as Mindfly has microformats sitting on their front page there for anyone to see that we support it, I figured that it was probably something that I needed to know at least a little bit about. It was more than a little confusing, and by the time that I was done, I felt somewhat like I was ten again, sitting in front of the television trying to put together clues on how to find Carmen Sandiego .  And let me tell you, she's a sneaky devil.  But microformats?  They're even worse!  Th...

A Modest Proposal (CSS, Not Cannibalism)

When Brit CSS mega-star Andy Clarke writes more than a paragraph on a topic in a blog post, you can usually assume a firestorm is about to follow. Yesterday he reiterated two intertwined topics that he's championed in the past (building for modern browsers first, and no longer showing clients static visuals), and so far the response I've seen isn't people freaking out in disagreement, but rather freaking out because they know Andy is correct but aren't sure how to fit ... more

My latest endeavour has been one of great trial and error; the kind of test of patience that would make Elmo look like he'd be fully qualified to do my job, given the amount of effort it looks like I've been putting into it today. Of course, Elmo is a fuzzy red guy -- and everyone knows that Grover could totally kick his furry red booty from one side of Sesame Street to the other -- but enough about me and my childhood obsessions. Today's project involves the re-re-start of a proj... more
A Pseudo-Tutorial on Learning JavaScript

There's a major risk with tutorials. You're devoting a portion of time to teach someone a portion of your hard-earned knowledge, which means you're helping foster future competition for your skillset. It seems like a bad idea in these financially troublesome times, so why risk it? In short, so you're pestered less. I can't count the number of times I've been asked to help someone with a small web-related task that was trivial to me but monumentous to them, but w... more

Last week Google shook up the hornet's nest that is web developer/designer world by releasing their own pugilistic entry into the bruising boxing match that is the web browser market: Chrome. The preceding statement isn't probably new news to anyone, as it seems every web-related news site, blog, and forum has been talking exclusively about it. As I most certainly wouldn't want the bandwagon to leave without me, I'll join into the fracas. There's a lot of cer... more
