My dad is here in Pittsburgh for a little visit, so we’re out seeing and doing stuff. Here’s a quick round-up of cool posts I found lately: Ever want to cook in your car ? Chief Family Officer shares some resources on how to do that if you have the inkling. Trent outlines the steps you might want to take to get away from paycheck-to-paycheck living . We’ve been there, and it isn’t fun. But, I’ve found that once you get a little progress and get a savings cushion started, the momentum really starts rolling and life becomes much less stressful. At Gather Little by Little, we learn some additional benefits of tithing . Frugal Chick has completed her emergency fund ! Yay! And she did it about six months before her original goal date. Way to go! From the Money Life Network: Emily at Remodeling this Life helped me to fix my site’s feed. Thanks! Check out her post on lessons in simplicity from children . At Free From Broke, we learn so...

A restaurant-esque money-saving menu
From: sensetosave.com
Post Date: 2008-03-06 10:42:04

My brother-in-law and his girlfriend are coming to visit us this weekend!  We’re really excited to spend time together. In an effort to save money, we’ll be eating our dinners at home, rather than at a restaurant . We’ll probably grab a lunch or two somewhere in town, though. Anyway, I don’t want to look like a total cheap-o when it comes to food, so I’m whipping out a restaurant-esque menu for our guests. I’ve selected a few dishes that I think will be... more

We consulted the newspaper, chose companies we knew of, and bought some shares on paper. Periodically, we checked our progress. Some of us lost quite a bit, but others did really well. Recently, I signed up for an online version of a stock simulation. Wall Street Survivor gives you $100,000 to invest. Prizes are awarded for top earners. One pe... more
How much two 20-somethings pay to live in Pittsburgh
From: sensetosave.com
Post Date: 2008-03-05 10:38:20

I mentioned that by my best estimates, we need a minimum of $1,800 to pay our expenses each month. Here’s what that would include: $750 rent on our 2 bedroom/1.5 bath 900 sq. foot apartment in Pittsburgh $277.33 car payment $415 every six months for car insurance (hopefully that will go down when we renew). That worked out to be about $84 on the five-payment plan $50 gas (sometimes more, sometimes less) $60 for phone and cable $50-90 for electric, depending on the sea... more
Financial goals and whatever for March
From: sensetosave.com
Post Date: 2008-03-05 08:40:46

At the beginning of this month, Shane and I sat down to look over all of our spending for the month of February. No purchase or expense stood out as, "Whoa! What were we thinking?!" but we spent more than I think we should have. Had it not been for our federal income tax refund, things could have gotten a little scary. For March, we’re going to do things a little differently. For starters, we’re only going to use our credit cards for gasoline . In the past, I’ve charge... more
