Kevin W. Baker of Republic of Dogs noted that there was no mention of George Bush in Sarah Palin’s entire speech. This got me thinking. Many people have noted that Bush has really been shunted aside during the Republican National Convention, and it’s hardly surprising given his justifiably abysmal approval ratings. The AP is reporting thousands of Iraqis took to the streets today to protest the new security agreement that allows American troops to remain in their country for three more years. Followers of a Shiite cleric on Friday stomped on and burned an effigy of President George W. Bush in the same central Baghdad square where Iraqis beat a toppled statue of Saddam Hussein with their sandals five years earlier. Chanting and waving flags, thousands of Muqtada al-Sadr’s followers filled Firdous S... more

With just 60 days left in his tenure, you might think that W.’s lame duck administration was sitting around relieved that another guy was taking over, counting the minutes until the flight leaves for Crawford. Not quite. Based on the flurry of quiet directives coming from the White House as the end of the term nears, it looks like the Bush Goose (or is it turducken?) isn’t quite cooked yet. In what has become a kind of presidential right-of-passage, the president (... more

It’s absurd to transfer the feelings one might have about the president to his wife Julia Reed | Today 12:55 pm Yes, I’m interested in reading Laura Bush’s autobiography. She’s a lovely, strong, interesting woman who handled a thankless job incredibly well. I also don’t think she’s been given enough credit for some of her activities while in office. She has done far more than read to grade-school children. She has actively supported the peop... more

Jacob Hornberger writes about the case of Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri , who has been locked up in South Carolina, in the same facility in which Jose Padilla (the American) was incarcerated and tortured. Here at The Future of Freedom Foundation, we have long argued against the assumption and exercise of the “enemy combatant” power, even with the right of habeas corpus. We have pointed out that those who were arguing that President Bush could be trusted with such power were misguided and... more
