It’s a federal offense in the U.S. to use someone else’s unsecured wireless network for illicit purposes. It’s a crime in Germany, too – committed by the network owner. The Wall Street Journal reports. “According to the FBI, it isn’t a federal offense to squat, as long as the squatter doesn’t use the connection to do anything illegal. Wi-Fi squatting is against the law in some states. A court in Germany ruled that the owner of an unsecured Wi-Fi network that a squatter used to illegally download rap songs is responsible for the crime – even though he proved that he wasn’t the one who stole the files, TechDirt reports. The German court said that network owners are responsible for securing their networks — and can be held liable if they don’t.“ Link via textually.org

But only a little one: From io9: This tiny device attaches to your fingertip, using a camera to translate visual images into feelings by activating a little vibrator attached to the sensitive nerves in your finger. So you wave your hands around and “feel” objects across the street. The abstract for the device, called the Fingersight, is rather interesting: We present a new method of sensing the 3D visual environment and controlling objects within it. The human hand is well suited to...

From Subtopia: Floating Prisons, and Other Miniature Prefabricated Islands of Carceral Territoriality, great article. It also got me thinking about the poems from Guantanamo detainees that was published last year - there are some extracts available at Boston.com news. “They have monuments to liberty And freedom of opinion, which is well and good. But I explained to them that Architecture is not justice…”...
