Paper mills dumping their employees has taken a toll on the lives of the type of people who are casual political voters and will make Wisconsin a landslide win for Obama.
From the Wisconsin Rapids area to Wausau to Green Bay-Appleton, Wisconsin 1,000s of millworkers are seeing how valued their labor and their lives are in 21st century America capitalism and world trade.
Jerks like McCain owning 13 cars and nine houses don't get it as he offers the option of buying health insurance fired workers cannot afford, and then slashing their unemployment benefits.
I don't think McCain has any idea the destruction that losing one's job can cause, which is why I feel that Ohio and Pennsylvania will join Wisconsin in telling McCain and the Republicans to go to hell.
Walter Shapiro has an article in Salon reporting from Green Bay:
"If Obama wins Wisconsin -- and I believe he will win -- it will be largely because of the fight that the millworke...

President-elect Obama wants to create 5 million new “Green Energy” jobs. The sooner the better, but how? What incentive or government program will create these jobs? Which sector of green energy will be targeted for job growth? Further, and importantly as unemployment rises, how soon will these new jobs appear in the help wanted section?
The economy needs jobs as soon as possible. If Obama wants to use green energy as an engine of growth, how can he jump start it to get it running?

He Could Even Touch Off a Huge Rally
I think we’re all getting a quite vivid sense that
President-elect Obama’s way of handling tough situations is to set
his jaw, furrow his brow, stare purposefully forward, say
reassuring things, but on no account to make any clear statements
of intent, or to actually do anything.
At least one of the consequences of this extremely risk-averse
approach to leadership, is that financial markets are completely in
the dark about what ... more

Anyway, after a somewhat crazy morning of scrambling (and a LOT of coffee) out here in Cruiskeen Lawn/Uppity Wisconsin land, things ... more

Great news for Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Louis Butler: There is a pent-up demand among voters, who want to vote for a black man.
Who knew?
It wasn't until Mike Nichols, the Journal Sentinel's Ozaukee/Washington County columnist, pointed it out that it became obvious.
Nichols's column appeared almost two weeks ago, but I was afraid if I wrote about it earlier that the Butler campaign would quit working, knowing that his election on April 1 is inevitable.

Last year, in a program promoted by the World Wildlife Fund and Sydney, Australia, Sydney turned off all of its lights for one hour. The effort was an attempt to draw attention to responsible energy use and the issue of global warming.
This year the WWF is asking us to do so around the world. An hour of darkness doesn't seem too much to ask. If you'd like to participate, turn off your lights between 8 and 9 PM on Saturday, your own local time. Learn more from the Earth Hour we... more
