I wrote a while ago that I was disgusted that the Tories had spent $300M on an election held for no reason - other than a vain and hopeless effort to secure a majority that Canadians do not trust them to wield responsibly. Well, we Canadians are pretty smart folk. The Tories pretended, of course, that the election was held simply to create a more effective Parliament, and in the wake of the wor...... [Show More]
I’ve argued before that startups need mentorship more than anything - practical, hands-on help from more experienced entrepreneurs, investors, executives, etc. That’s even more true now, given the tough times many startups will face. First time startup entrepreneurs in particular, who might not have gone through the last crash, are not adequately prepared to handle things. “C...... [Show More]
A Conference on Startups? In the Middle of a Meltdown?
[ This article was also posted on my tech blog, Global Nerdy. ]
Given the doom and gloom coming from all the business new outlets, it may seem crazy to try and start a startup in the current economic crisis. Y Combinator’s programmer -turned-es sayist-tur ned-ventur e capitalist Paul Graham would disagree :
The economic situation is a...... [Show More]
These days, it’s become quite common to see surveillance cameras pretty much all over in any major downtown metropolitan area. There have been plenty of protests against such cameras, but it hasn’t done much to stop them from spreading. However, Rob Hyndman points us to the news that Toronto has agreed to remove some controversial surveillance cameras that were placed at an inter...... [Show More]

Sarah Palin’s record of trying to overturn subsistence hunting and fishing laws is attracting some attention . Her views are a beautiful example of the middle class construction of wilderness , that wilderness is simply for recreation, something to be enjoyed in short bursts, or exploited to exhaustion. There appears to be no place for subsistence hunting in such an outlook.

The mesh team — Rob Hyndman , Mark Evans of PlanetEye , Stuart Macdonald of Tripharbor , Mike McDerment of Freshbooks and I — have been brainstorming about mesh 2009 next spring, and we were hoping some of you might want to contribute some of your brains to the storm, as it were. Let us know who you would most like to see speak at mesh and maybe a little about what you want them t...... [Show More]
Why is it so often that we find those who strongly push for certain types of draconian laws are later found to be guilty of violating those laws? The latest is a mini-scandal in Canada, involving a plagiarized speech . Now, I’ve pointed out before that I’m actually all for plagiarizing politicians . However, as Rob Hyndman points out, it turns out that the guy who copied the sp...... [Show More]
So we’re up for an election on Oct 14th here in Canada. Not many great choices, unfortunately, but this commenter to a globe and mail article is spot on re: Harper.
Stephen Harper does not need to lay out a plan for the country during this election, because Canadians have already seen his plan, and know it very well:
Reduce taxes for corporations and the wealthy. Placate non-think...... [Show More]
In one of those ostensibly annoying but secretly pleasing pyramid thingies that spread throughout the web, I’ve been tagged by Jordan Furlong, editor , blogger and sometime Slawyer , to post (under the title “5 Blogs & 5 Blawgers 8221;) about five non-law blogs I like and then ponzi up five blawgers and tag them. Here we go:

I’m just killing time in the Health Sciences Library while waiting for my ride (carpooling - environmen tal-friend liness and all that! :P), so now is as good a time as any to get caught up on miscellaneous links my avid readers (yes, both of them!) may enjoy:

There’s been some salacious commentary (such as WAC’s Like a Vixen ) about Blawg Review # 171 . I just want to say to anyone who missed the sexual revolution -- on either side of the generation gap -- we’re sorry to have started it all. We just never really left high school. We’ve also heard some complaints that the most rece...... [Show More]

Well DemoCampToronto18 was a lot of fun. It was great to be back in a social setting. There were some challenges with the new venue. But the team at Supermarket has agreed to work with us to solve them going forward. They even made a number of suggestions for improvement without any commentary or input from DemoCampers.
Big thanks to everyone that attended, DemoCamp is about connecting you with...... [Show More]
It still amazes me to see the spectacle of the mainstream media only dimly suspecting that we are not being fully informed about what is happening in Afghanistan .

First of all, I want to thank the editors and everyone who submitted posts for today’s edition of the Blawg Review. I was impressed, as I think you’ll be, by the range and variety of the posts, and hope you enjoy them. The number of this Blawg Review, 168, has no numerical significance I could find except that it’s the number of hours ...... [Show More]
Part of the supposed appeal of the new 3G iPhone when it was announced by Steve Jobs a few months back was that it was going to be much cheaper than the old iPhone. That was true until you actually looked at the fine print. The $199 pricing only applied in the US to those who signed a long-term contract with AT&T — for which you had to pay higher service fees. In other countries the s...... [Show More]
News today that Rogers is offering a 6GB plan for the iPhone and other 3G phones. So, no unlimited data plan for you - you’re still too stupid to make decisions for yourself! Bear with me for a moment while I start with a media story. The Washington Post has announced another round of buyouts of writers and editors, including several very senior and respected professionals. Commenting on the impact of the mass exodus is Post writer Howard Kurtz (HT to Rob Hyndman ), who notes:
“The talented reporters, editors and photographers walking out the door ...... [Show More]
