Neither Patrick nor I grew up saying grace at the table, but as soon as Sabrina started talking a little we decided we wanted to make some words of thanks part of our evening meal.
When we first started we stuck with what we had heard in films—“We thank you Lord for these gifts which we are about to receive.” But this felt a little old fashioned and not personal enough for us. We found...... [Show More]

It’s difficult for me to remember a time when I did not read. Books were as much a part of my childhood as play, and so much of my play revolved around stories. As a child, The Humpback of Notre Dame was read aloud to me, and we named our new kitten Esmerelda. We had to change the cat’s name when we found out that “she” was really a “he,” but for a few days she was our dancing gyp...... [Show More]

What we need are books that hit us like a most painful misfortune, like the death of someone we loved more than we love ourselves, that make us feel as though we had been banished to the woods, far from any human presence, like a suicide. A book must be the ax for the frozen sea within us.

In my pre-kid days, I could wile away hours at art museums, taking in beautiful paintings and trying to comprehend brush strokes. When I first went to college in New York, my roommate and I hit the Metropolitan Museum of Art almost immediately to choose black and whites to decorate our living room. It was soothing and comforting to see the prints while studying or cooking up a quick meal.

This is an absolutely AMAZING video, brough to you via Pharyngula . How can so many "experts" possibly be so stunningly wrong? Were they really wrong? Or were they never offering opinions in the first place, just propaganda?

On the Banks of Plum Creek , by Laura Ingalls Wilder, was the first chapter book I ever read. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle , by Barbara Kingsolver, changed the way I thought about food and eating. On Writing , by Stephen King, propelled me into finishing my book.

I only read Jim Fergus ’s One Thousand White Women because a friend whose opinion I value recommended it. Well, that was an inspired recommendation as I read the book over Thanksgiving weekend and could not put it down.
The premise of the novel is quite interesting. It is inspired with the historical fact that in 1654, a Cheyenne Chief suggested to the Army authorities that the Cheyenne...... [Show More]

I was in college, I think, which would put me in my late teens or early twenties at the time. It was summer, and I was with my mom at a garage sale, and though I didn’t think much of dusty knicknacks or other people’s clothes, I would always make sure to comb through the box of books.
I found a paperback by Anne Tyler called BREATHING LESSONS . It cost 25 cents. I don’t rememb...... [Show More]
